The Old State House: A Look Back at a Historic Landmark

The Old State House in Boston, Massachusetts is one of the oldest public buildings in the United States. The Old State House served as the seat of government for the Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1713 to 1776. During this time, it was the site of many important events in American history. In 1770, it was the site of the Boston Massacre, when British soldiers fired into a crowd of colonists, killing five people. In 1773, it was the site of the Boston Tea Party, when colonists dumped tea into Boston Harbor to protest taxation without representation. In 1776, it was the site of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

In 1798, the Massachusetts General Court moved to a new building and the Old State House became a commercial building. It was used as a hotel, a theater, and a bank before being purchased by the City of Boston in 1881. The building was restored to its original appearance and opened to the public as a museum in 1882.

Today, the Old State House is a National Historic Landmark and is open to visitors year-round. It is managed by the Bostonian Society and features exhibits on the history of Boston and Massachusetts. Visitors can explore the building’s many rooms and learn about its role in American history. The building also hosts special events throughout the year, including lectures, concerts, and reenactments.
